Description
NOTE: Slides not included, but will be offered in a separate listing. Left in the unit to show how it looks filled. From my research I believe this is a very rare unit, not being able to find another example on the internet. Coming from a local estate where I believe it was once used in a large church.
Probably 1920s or 1930s era Bausch & Lomb Balopticon, Type AU-1. 115 Volts, 5 Amps. Serial number: SR1388
Holds approximately 72 glass slides that measure 3-1/4" x 4"
Very large size and HEAVY. The base portion is made of cast iron. Removable hood is metal.
Still in working order! Turns on and the slides gradually rotate up where they are projected. The main lens on the front is cloudy and would need to be somehow cleaned or replaced in order to really show the best image. The blub still works. Top compartment hold three large removable glass lens that feel like jewels when held.
There were three additional shield pieces found with the unit, but I do not know how they were used. I assume there is probably something that was supposed to mount to the front around the lens with those bolts. It seems to me that the unit would still work fine without these additional pieces.
The slide holders show some rust and oxidation, which make them a bit rough, but they will still hold slides with no problem. A few of them are slightly bent, but the mechanism still works with no problem and these can probably be easily bent back into place. This unit was stored in a garage for many years, so it took a lot of cleaning up.
If you collect glass slides, this would be the ultimate unit to use to show them off to friends.
Measures: 29"h x 23"w x 11"d
Can not be shipped due to weight and fragile nature, so we recommend uship.com to find a blanket wrap shipper.
